Swift & Company was founded in 1872 by Gustavus "George" F. Swift and James A. Hathaway in Boston, Massachusetts. Its industry is food processing and its headquarters were in Boston, Massachusetts (1872-1875), Chicago, Illinois (1875-1989) and Greeley, Colorado (1989-present). In 1973, the company was acquired by Esmark Inc., and again by ConAgra Foods Inc. in 1989 (merged with Monfort division). It has been owned by JBS S.A. since 2007.

Note: Prior to the company's founding, G. F. Swift had started his own meatpacking business in 1855 in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Swift moved to Boston in 1869 and subsequently entered into the employ of J. A. Hathaway before the two formed a partnership in 1872.
